About Us
In December 2008, a small group of individuals brought together by Dr. Damon Odom, DMV, united to form Union Humane Society. We began fundraising with the purpose of building an animal shelter in Union Parish. The goal was to be able to rescue abused and abandoned animals and have some where to house them until they could be adopted. In 2012, a generous donor and animal lover, Eugene Neal, donated 56 acres of property and $100,000 to the cause. With his donation and money that had been saved through fundraising and donations, we had enough money to build a modest shelter for the parish. However, after a mild property tax increase was not passed, we had no means to sustain the shelter. So UHS put the shelter on hold and devoted more efforts to spay and neuter programs. To date, we have assisted with the spay/neuter of over 4000 cats and dogs in Union Parish. Any resident of Union Parish can apply for assistance for a free spay or neuter of their pet regardless of their income. Volunteers have also fostered countless animals at their own home and continue to do so in hopes of finding them furever homes. Due to the publics continued confusion about who funds and operated Union Humane Society the board of directors of UHS decided to rename/rebrand in hopes to limit confusion. Union Humane will not be known as Eugene Neal Animal Rescue and will do business as Union Humane Society. We do still have plans to build the “Eugene Neal Animal Shelter” and are very close to breaking ground.
